909 Edwin appears in the 1881 census livng with George Eggleton and Rhoda. To date, I have been unable to identify Edwin's birth in the BMD registers. As he was born some 4 years before his mother married George, I have assumed for now, that George is not Edwin's father. In fact, Hurst parish records confirm that Edwin's mother was a "single woman". Reviewing future appearances of Edwin in censuses, it is possible that he was not an infant when he was christened. I have therefore indicated that his birth year is approximate. Hawkins, Edwin (I13590)

Edwin and Linna lived in Mary Street, Bovey, and Edwin worked as an earthenware potter. They raised two girls and five boys, the oldest three boys all serving in the Devonshire Regiment in the First World War. There is no record of such a marriage, nor is there a record of the birth or death of John Dodimead prior to her departure for the US in October 1912. Her petition states that he is "deceased" and that he "Never entered the US". Family F4025

962 Emma presented her Petition and Declaration and was granted her citizenship on 14 Jun 1946. I am certain that she falsified her application by declaring that she was the widow of "John Dodimead". Although she provides the date of her marriage to him, she is unable to provide his date of birth or death. I believe that Emma's son was illigitimate and that "John Dodimead" never existed. Dodimead, Emma Louisa (I933)

He had an exemplary military career, raising to the rank of Sergeant. Like many others, Ernest was wounded on several ocassions whilst serving in France during WW1. He suffered gas burns to his hands which became septic and at least one other wound from gunfire or shrapnel, although not serious. Upon his demobilisation on 29 Jan 1919, Ernest re-enlisted in the Royal Army Service Corps, Ex Force Canteens Division. This was the forerunner to the NAAFI. Pelluet, Ernest Alfred (I5424)

987 Ernest sailed aboard the 'Philadelphia' and was only carrying $25 when he arrived at Ellis Island Immigration centre on 3 June 1911. His final destination was given as Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. According the the immigration paperwork, Ernest had travelled before. He had spent 10 years in Chicago. Perhaps this is why there is no UK census entry for hin in 1891. On the immigration paperwork, he gives his next of kin as Victor Webber of St Leonards Road, Bexhill-on-Sea.
Into Place: Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada
Webber, Ernest Distin (I16566)

  • 13 April 1909: Deserted from Fermoy, County Cork, Ireland. Arrested by Sergeant Thomas Westman on 14 April 1909 at the Quay, Waterford, Ireland. The Sergeant was awarded a twenty shilling reward. 112 days detention for desertion, stoppage of pay to cover cost of rifle and other military possessions and all former service towards engagement forfeited.

  • 11 August 1913: Charged with being in bed 2 hours after reveille. Severely reprimanded by Major Mortimer

    • Ernest must have made good after these incidents because a report by his commanding officer dated 4 May 1914 states that he was ... "Steady, honest and hard working".

Ernest was formally discharged on 31 December 1915 although by then, he was already a Police Officer in the Bombay Police Force and resident, with his wife, at the police station in Princess Street, Bombay. Prior to his discharge, Ernest served as the Regimental Librarian for 18 months. He had held the rank of Lance Corporal from 1 May 1911.
