On 26 Jul 1916, Herbert was wounded in France. he received a gunshot wound to his chest/shoulder and a telegram from "Military Hospital, Whalley Lane", dated 5 August 1916 reads, "Regret to report 13831 Pte Cleaver SWB is seriously ill in this hospital, relatives have been informed and rely (railway?) warrant issued". It appears that Herbert spent several months in hospital before being discharged as "No longer physically fit for war service"
