A grand-daughter of Maria makes this observation: "When John Henry returned from America in 1885 he remarried (Mary Quayle, a widow with 3 daughters) but the older children didn't get on with their step-mother so the older ones left home and my grandmother (Maria) was put in a church boarding school (not sure just where but in the Seaforth area I think."

Leonard's grand-daughter adds this: "Marie came from a family of sailors but she was extremely seasick for the whole voyage to New Zealand. Though married, they were in separate cabins. Marie was near the bow with a number of other women. I'm not sure where Len was but he had his sea legs."
