- Around 100,000 children ("Home Children", as they were known), were migrated to Canada from the UK between 1870 and 1948, 30,000 of which through Dr Barnardo's. Many of the children were vagrants, either homeless or living in poverty in the workhouse. Some were simply abandoned to Dr Barnardo's because one of their parents had died and the surviving parent couldn't afford to keep all of their offspring.
Ada was part of a group of 101 children from Dr Barnardo's. There were other groups of "waifs and strays" sent by other agencies aboard the "Parisian", scheduled to arrive in Canada on 2 Aug 1901.
