It was at her mother's home that she gave birth to Fred who was a whopping 11lbs. Three years later Herbert was born, athough he only lived about a year as he had a hole in his heart." - Melissa Haddon.

Fred inherited his father's political views - with WW2 came POW camps everywhere in Australia. I'm not exactly sure how he did it, but he had a number of Italians from his local area bought back home. He also packed up Marie and his two daughters (Lesley and Noreen) in the middle of the night and sent them to Melbourne from their home in Carina when they found out that they were to be interred - Marie was German. Fred told Noreen and Lesley 'This is the only time you are allowed to lie, if anybody asks, your mother is not German!'" - Melissa Haddon
